Advanced Biorisk Officers Training (ABOT)

MBBA established a partnership with the U.S. Department of State Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP) to promote and strengthen biosafety and biosecurity in Malaysia. An eight-weeks intensive training is on-going over a one-year period in four, two-week sessions. The first two-week session was successfully organized from 14-25 January 2013 at Wisma R&D, Universiti Malaya and attended by 23 participants from various national institutions and agencies. The main trainers were Robert Heckert from BEP-Robert Heckert Consulting, Eric Neil Cook and Hailey Smith from BEP-Sandia National Laboratories and Jeffrey Owens from NDR Inc.

The objectives of this training were:

  • To build human capacity in best practices of laboratory biosafety and biosecurity management
  • To train safety professionals to become institutional Biosafety and Biosecurity Officers at bioscience institutions throughout Malaysia
  • To train safety professionals to serve as resource for the country and the region in future biosafety/biosecurity trainings by providing them complete training materials and teaching techniques

The schedule for the training sessions is as follows:

  • Session 1: 14-25 January 2013  (COMPLETED)
  • Session 2: 18-29 March 2013 (COMPLETED)
  • Session 3: 23 September-4 October 2013
  • Session 4: 11-22 November 2013
